A Phenomenal Sighting prepared by Mary C. Kimball On the evening of August 22, 1968, between the townships of Sangerville and Dover- Foxcroft, Maine, an observer has reported having seen a phenomenon in the eastern sky of such breathtaking beauty that, even at a much later date, it is almost impossible to believe. To quote the observer: I had gone for a brief stroll before retiring, and upon returning, paused momentarily at the eastern end of the driveway for a final and more unobstructed glimpse of the starlit sky. Instead of turning around, I continued to walk slowly backwards down the driveway fully intending to absorb as much of the view as possible before entering the house. However, as I reached a location in the driveway where there is an opening of considerable width between two tall trees on the lawn, which separates the driveway from the road...beyond which lies wide, open fields...I saw a flash of unusually bright color. I turned quickly, and faced in the direction of the, at that time, unknown object. What appeared to me to be an immense sized object in the shape of a brightly lighted V was moving in a downward slant towards the earth from a position slightly above treetop level. I felt the astonishment of what I believe would be that of any person confronted with the sudden unexpectedness of an object, as large in comparison as that of a full known aircraft to be. Despite this feeling of astonishment, my curiosity so overcame me that I ran out into the road to get an even closer look...well remembering as I did that I believed this object was, indeed, going to crash directly behind a small garage. When I was looking directly at this double V-shaped object...double in the sense that the entire bottom edge was of a luminous green, the entire top edge of the purest white, with two-thirds of its inner center, from the inside point, a combination of both luminous colors, I realized that much to my complete amazement this gigantic object was actually dematerializing right before my eyes. My one thought, which I kept repeating over and over again, was a profound: Lord, how can this be, and how can anyone ever describe such incredible beauty! Note: Conditions of the sky: clear, starlight. No clouds. At no time was there any sound, whatsoever, accompanying the object during the period of observation. There were no visible signs of any vapor trails. At such a low altitude, only the blackness of the night was its only background. At the time when the object began to dematerialize, no visible particles fell to the ground. The process of sudden dematerialization affected the entire object at once, from the point of the V to its two ends. No sight, nor sound of any normal aircraft was in the vicinity during the sighting.
